On June 19, 2023, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Thelma Lee (Clark) Hurdle, age 90, transitioned to be with our Lord and Savior at her home in Portsmouth, VA. Thelma was born on January 5, 1933, in Tarboro, North Carolina to the late Nina Clark and Jessie Harper. She moved to Portsmouth with her family at an early age. Thelma was educated in the Portsmouth Public School System. Thelma was former long-time member of New First Baptist Church of Taylorsville and a current member of Tabernacle Church. She sang in the choir at both churches. Thelma was married to the late Jather Raymond Hurdle, Sr. in May of 1952. She was a dedicated stay at home mom to their six children. Thelma loved being around her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She liked to travel (if she did not have to fly). Thelma liked to shop, watch the local news (two or three times a day), old westerns and the Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful. She prided herself in always looking nice whenever she went out and she loved to collect watches. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Nina Clark and Jessie Harper; her granddaughter, Shileah A. Hurdle; her husband, Jather R. Hurdle Sr.; brothers Leroy Clark, Jesse Clark, and Johnny Clark, from Portsmouth, Jessie Harper, Jr., John Harper, and Benjamin Harrison from Tarboro, North Carolina; sisters Geneva Perry, Bessie Knight, Glennie Mae Coverington, Martha Harper and Mary Harper all from Tarboro, North Carolina.
