TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesians are familiar with kangkung dishes. Also known as water spinach, the vegetation is one of the country`s favorite edibles.
However, water spinaches are illegal vegetation in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA), in charge of the country's agriculture sector, monitors and bans the distribution of kangkung in US markets.
In America, water spinach is considered an aquatic nuisance species and is therefore highly regulated a.k.a. pests. The country has also seen frequent cases of food poisoning, hence the strict prohibition of its circulation.
Kangkung is even considered an illegal object by the USDA. If you are caught circulating water spinaches without permits, you may be subject to punishment from the authorities.
